Who taught you how to interview? According to recent research from the UK’s leading independent job board, CV-Library, nearly half of UK professionals (47.6%) had to teach themselves about interview processes. A staggering 64.4% also believe that there’s not enough education out there on interview preparation tips.

Having surveyed 1,000 UK workers, CV-Library can reveal the top five rules that you need to follow in order to have a successful interview. These interview preparation tips aren’t surprising, however, they are definitely worth considering before every interview.

Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library, comments: “It’s concerning to see that many workers aren’t learning about interview processes until they’re well in to their working careers, potentially having lost out on some great opportunities as a result. Preparation is always best. While actions such as researching the company and choosing a smart outfit may seem fairly basic, some candidates still don’t get this right! Following these five simple steps could be the key to securing yourself your dream job.”

It’s clear that workers consider research to be vital. 11.4% say that you should also research the person that’s going to be interviewing you. Furthermore, remaining calm and confident also emerged as a key tip. This is despite a staggering 72.6% stating that they get nervous before an interview.

From learning more about the company, to practising interview questions, research and preparation were cited as some of the top steps to interview success. It’s therefore concerning to learn that one in five (19.9%) workers only give themselves an hour to prepare before an interview. A further 30.4% are only allowing themselves up to a few hours.

If you follow these interview preparation tips and properly invest time in preparing for your interview, you will vastly increase your chances of success. Good luck!
