However you stumbled upon it, it’s extremely likely that you have watched a TED Talk at some point in your life. If you haven’t, don’t feel left out, we’re here to fill you in. We’ve put together a list of some life-changing presentations by TED British speakers that will leave you feeling inspired.
First of all, how did TED Talks become the inspirational phenomenon they are today? TED is a non-profit community with the sole purpose of spreading ideas. The first ever TED conference took place all the way back in 1984 and included a demo of a new piece of technology: the compact disc. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design, and the founders believed in a strong link between the three topics. This singular conference soon became an invitation-only annual event which was believed to be one of the ‘intellectual and emotional highlights of the year’.
Over the years, TED’s popularity grew amongst scholars, religious leaders and artists. Since its humble beginning, TED has exploded into the community we now know. The official TED Talk library now contains over 2000 talks, but with official TED and independent TEDx events taking place all over the world, the exact number of talks that have taken place is far more impressive.
The topics covered range from feminism, to business, to neuroscience, to psychology and self-confidence, amongst many others. Popular talks include those by motivational speaker Tony Robbins, social psychologist Amy Cuddy and even David Blaine. There really is a TED Talk out there for everyone!
We want to introduce you to some TED British speakers, all of whom are experts in their respective fields. These talks cover topics that will help you be the best version of you in both your work and personal lives. Take a look at these and get ready to feel inspired.
1. ‘Programming your mind for success’
Carrie Green (TEDx, Manchester)
The beginning of this video boasts one of the most thought-provoking introductions to a TED talk that we’ve ever seen – it’ll certainly give you something to think about! The founder of the Female Entrepreneurs Association, Carrie Green, expertly delivers this talk about changing the way you think to reach your full potential. In her engaging speech, she explores the idea that factors such as fear, motivation and obstacles can hold us back – and why we shouldn’t let them.
2. ‘Entrepreneurs should follow their instincts’
Steve Bartlett (TEDx, London)
Prepare to be impressed. At the mere age of 24, Steve Bartlett is not only the CEO of his own business but his company, Social Chain, is now Europe’s largest social marketing agency. The business is expanding rapidly and boasts offices in London, Manchester, New York and Berlin. In his TED talk, he talks about how success can come from ‘accidental innovation’ (creating something from knowing nothing) and talks of the merits of challenging convention. His success speaks for itself, so he clearly knows what he’s talking about!
3. ‘The surprising secret to speaking with confidence’
Caroline Goyder (TEDx, Brixton)
Caroline Goyder began her career as a voice teacher at a prestigious drama and speech school, she has developed a system to help those outside of the arts to improve their presence and confidence. Not only has she written a book, ‘GRAVITAS’, to help individuals ensure that their voice is heard, she is also a regular conference and radio guest speaker. In this talk, assisted by a slightly unusual prop, she discusses how to release your inner confidence and find your voice.
4. ‘The power of purpose’
Steve Taylor (TEDx Square Mile)
We work hard and we do it for a large portion of our lives. Sometimes, it can be easy to lose sight of exactly why you drag yourself out of bed in the morning. Don’t forget your purpose. In this talk, Psychology lecturer and author, Steve Taylor, speaks of the massive importance that purpose bears in our everyday lives.
5. ‘The art of being yourself’
Caroline McHugh (TEDx, Milton Keynes Women)
Happiness is directly linked to career success. It’s a common misconception that success leads to happiness, in fact, there is evidence to suggest that happy people are more likely to become successful in their work. Part of being truly happy is accepting who you are and being yourself. In her emotive speech, Caroline McHugh, a speaker, coach and author, encourages you to be the ‘most authentic version of yourself.’ It’s an interesting watch!
6. ‘Perspective is everything’
Rory Sutherland (TEDx Athens)
Advertising guru, Rory Sutherland, encompasses 3 ‘E’s: eccentric, entertaining and enthusiastic. Which makes for a particularly engaging talk about perspective. Rory is a columnist for The Spectator and is the Vice Chairman of marketing firm Ogilvy and Mather, so has a wealth of experience to draw from. In this video, he discussed various examples that show just how powerful perspective can be, and this is something you can apply in many situations inside and outside of work.
7. ‘Being brilliant every single day’
Dr. Alan Watkins (TEDx, Portsmouth)
Trust him, he’s a doctor! Dr. Alan Watkins is a neuroscientist who specialises in leadership and human performance. He is the founder and CEO of Complete Coherence, a business and management consultancy that uses both science and business strategies to help individuals within organisations ‘be brilliant every day’. In this speech, Dr. Watkins uses his expertise and simplified neuroscience to share just some of his secrets to help you be brilliant, too.
The great thing about TED talks is that they’re all usually 18 minutes or less. That means they pack a punch very quickly. Less than 20 minutes to enlightenment; who can say no to that? These are just some of the great TED/TEDx talks that are out there! You’ll be surprised at just how many topics are discussed and how quickly a short video can change your life.
Enjoy!
