In a world where the internet is probably the most critical source of technology to date, people are starting to see a widening of opportunity and connect with brands and people from all over the place like never before, making SEO more important than ever.
Anyone considering the world of SEO will soon learn and have to be comfortable with failure. Being in SEO, it is essential to be open-minded and to want to never be comfortable in your one path of knowledge because the internet is forever changing and adapting.
There is no manual on “How to SEO” because it’s constantly evolving, and although you may learn the basics, you have to learn from your failures as that is a natural part of being in the SEO career.
We spoke to James from Complete White Label who has outlined what an SEO career looks like, and everything you need to know about a job in search engine optimisation.
Never the Same Old, Different Day
If you are craving a career that gives you something new and exciting to try and unravel, dissect and solve every day, then SEO may be just for you. There are endless new tools and challenges to face and deal with, repeatedly meaning it’s never a case of the same old thing, a different day.
You have to like and enjoy what your doing in SEO because to stay ahead of the curve, you have to stay up to date with what the search engines are doing and handle different problems and changes quickly and effectively.
Building Your SEO Skill Set
The best thing about SEO is that you don’t need to have a million degrees and qualifications coming out of your ears; you can start learning from nothing. But the most significant issue people face when trying to learn SEO is that they lose their patience and give up.
So if you are determined and eager to learn, make sure to give yourself a specific outline and schedule of what you want to learn and when. Figure out what kind of SEO you want to be, whether that’s a technical SEO, on-page SEO or an off-page SEO because they all have different aspects that make SEO a fascinating career.
Other skills you might want to learn to become a great SEO are:
- Link-building,
- Mastering SEO Tools,
- Keywords and backlinks.
- Basic coding and much more!
Salary
You have a couple of options for working as an SEO. You can become a freelancer and charge your own rates and work on your own time, or find a career with an agency or business that will give you certain hours and salary for your work.
Working as a freelancer, depending on your knowledge and capabilities, you can start with a range of £40 per hour rate, and if you feel like you’re more experienced, you can go all the way up to £200 or more depending on what it is you are doing for that client.
If freelance isn’t the life for you and you would rather find an agency or business to take you on, firstly, you may need to show examples of your work, or you may be given a test to do to ensure you do know what you’re talking about.
But after that, a standard SEO salary can be anything from £25 to £40K a year, and that depends on the kind of work you’re doing and the business or agency you are working for.
Why Choose an SEO Career?
Anyone who enjoys finding out their own research and solving problems will really enjoy what SEO work has to bring to the table.
Also, SEO is a job for life. As long as the internet is always around, people will need SEO’s to sort out their websites and make them rank, so it’s a career path for the future and one you can easily mould around your goals and aspirations in life.
Whether creating your own multi-million agency or working as the Head of SEO of someone else’s, SEO is here to stay.
