When a job offer finally arrives, it’s a great feeling! You share your good news with family, friends and probably your entire social network. But after accepting a job offer, there are some things that you should be doing in preparation for commencing your new role.
While it’s great to take some time to relax before your impending start date, there are some steps that you can be taking to ensure that you make a great impression on your first day.
Here are some things for you to consider:
Can you refresh your knowledge?
If you can get ahead of the game and do some work to refresh your knowledge or get to know the industry that you are working in, then you should do it. If you can find out anything more about the company or the team you will be joining, then it is also worth having another look at this online and revisiting your interview research.
What can you find out about your colleagues?
This tends to be an easier task if you are joining a small or medium-sized business, but you may be able to do some digging with larger companies too. The first place to look is on the company website to see if there is a section about the team. You can also visit the company’s page on LinkedIn where you may find most (if not all) employees listed down the right-hand side of the page.
If you have had a look at who the team are then you will have the added benefit of not forgetting names on your first day and you will have a better idea of what people do within the company.
Is your work wardrobe ready?
You’ll want to look the part on your first day and ensure that you instantly fit in with the team. Knowing what the company dress-code is and preparing your work outfits will help you to slot right in and feel comfortable.

Is there anything else you need?
Depending on your role, you may need to think about whether there is anything else you might need to bring on your first day. Give it some thought and see if anything springs to mind. For example, with an office role you may want to take a notepad and pen.
Now you can relax
It is good to take some time to relax in the days running up to starting a new job. You want to be able to jump right into your new role feeling de-stressed, motivated and ready to start contributing and making a difference!
